Is Happy the Hodag's first book, Tales From The Trees, the first children's book about a hodag for kids? Nope! I believe Caroline Arnold's wonderful books, The Terrible Hodag, And The Animal Catchers (1989) were the very first books for kids about a hodag. Happy is, however, the first hodag character created for kids, meaning, that while a hodag was lurking in other stories, Happy is the first character creation (2006), that I know of.

What is a hodag? The hodag is a mythical forest monster known to live in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, specifically in and around Rhinelander. But—hodags are exceptionally fast and love to travel so you never know when and where you'll run into one 😉.

Is the hodag real? As long as there are truly wild spaces and places for mysterious creatures to live their lives to the fullest, the hodag and other cryptids exist...IMO.

What does a hodag eat? According to the Explore Rhinelander page, hodags eat 'mud turtles and water snakes, oxen and white bulldogs (but only on Sundays), and it's also rumored they snack on the occasional wandering lumberjack. But I only know for sure that pine needle tea is how Happy the Hodag gets his vitamin C.

Where does a hodag live? Hodags are thought to live in caves which is extremely mysterious as the Rhinelander area geology does not support caves. It's far more likely that they live in large burrows, with their entrances hidden between large boulders left behind by melting glaciers or in the hills and berns formed by the aforementioned glaciers.

Are Hodags Green Bay Packers fans? Human hodags are typically fans, for sure. It's hard to say though, about the mysterious beast, but I have heard rumors of glowing red and green eyes outside of folks' living rooms during Packer games. This would suggest that hodags, Happy included, could be risking being seen by humans to catch the game 😉.

A lot of folks call this festival 'Hodag' for short and don't even know about the mythical monster or local Hodag heritage when they're visiting the area!
